PATIENTS with prostate cancer may be able to avoid radical surgery and subsequent incontinence and impotence with radioactive ''seeds,'' no bigger than grains of rice, that are strategically implanted in the prostate, says a Seattle doctor who has monitored 152 cancer patients over the last decade. The findings, published today in Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society, show that of patients undergoing the treatment -- both with and without additional external irradiation therapy -- 97, or 64 percent, remained
clinically and biochemically free of the disease at the 10-year mark.
